Chinese New Year Songs for Kids


Aside from learning grammar and new vocabularies in their regular Chinese for children classes, kids need to learn the culture of the target language, especially if they are non-background learners. One of the most important cultural event for Chinese people is the Chinese New Year, which is celebrated on the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar. The celebration lasts for two weeks and it is an exciting time for kids because they will receive red packets from their parents and other relatives, and get to wear new clothes. In China, the Chinese New Year is a national holiday that lasts for one week. The excitement is comparable to Christmas holiday, when kids receive presents and do not have to go to school.

There are many activities that teachers and kids learning Chinese can do to learn about the Chinese New Year. Kids can learn about Chinese zodiacs and find out which animal zodiac they belong to. They can learn about the legend of Chinese New Year. They can also learn some Chinese New Year songs.

You may have noticed that the word 福 is turned upside down. This symbolises that fortune has arrived. This is because the word for arrive 到 is similar in sound to the word 倒, which means upside down.
