JAPANESE COURSE LEVEL CHECK

Not sure what level you should start from? Use the level check description below as a guideline.

Beginner 1

  • You have never studied Japanese before.

Beginner 2

  • You have completed Genki Book 1 up to chapter 2; or
  • You have studied Japanese for 20 hours (classroom-based) or 10 hours (1-on-1 lessons), but you have not learnt kanji. You know how to ask for time and prices, how to ask for direction, and how to order food. You have learnt about positive and negative statements.

Beginner 3

  • You have completed Genki Book 1 up to chapter 4; or
  • You have studied Japanese for 40 hours (classroom-based) or 20 hours (1-on-1 lessons), and you have started learning kanji (about 20 words). You know about verb conjugation, present tense, past tense, adjectives, how to express likes & dislikes, and how to make suggestions.

Beginner 4

  • You have completed Genki Book 1 up to chapter 6; or
  • You have studied Japanese for 60 hours (classroom-based) or 30 hours (1-on-1 lessons), and you have learnt about 50 kanji words. You know about how to make polite requests, te-form, how to express prohibition, how to explain a reason, and continuous tense.

Intermediate 1

  • You have completed Genki Book 1 up to chapter 8 and can read hiragana and katakana; or
  • You have studied Japanese for 80 hours (classroom-based) or 40 hours (1-on-1 lessons), and you have learnt about 80 kanji words. You know about present tense and past tense short forms, informal speech, quotation, and conjugation.

Intermediate 2

  • You have completed Genki Book 1 up to chapter 10 and can read hiragana and katakana; or
  • You have studied Japanese for 100 hours (classroom-based) or 50 hours (1-on-1 lessons), and you have learnt about 100 kanji words. You know about making comparisons, present perfect tense, how to state a plan, and how to express hopes & wishes.

Intermediate 3

  • You have completed Genki Book 1 p to chapter 12 and can read hiragana and katakana; or
  • You have studied Japanese for 120 hours (classroom-based) or 60 hours (1-on-1 lessons), and you have learnt about 120 kanji words.  You know about how to give advice, potential verbs, how to express probability and compliments.

Intermediate 4

  • You have completed Genki Book 1 & 2 up to chapter 14 and can read hiragana and katakana; or
  • You have studied Japanese for 140 hours (classroom-based) or 70 hours (1-on-1 lessons), and you have learnt about 150 kanji words.  You know about volitional form, qualifier, giving and receiving, how to express hopes and regrets.

Advanced 1

  • You have completed Genki Book 2 up to chapter 16; or
  • You have studied Japanese for 160 hours (classroom-based) or 80 hours (1-on-1 lessons), and you have learnt about 180 kanji words.  You know about transitive & intransitive verbs, supposition, and honorific verbs.

Advanced 2

  • You have completed Genki Book 2 up to chapter 18; or
  • You have studied Japanese for 180 hours (classroom-based) or 90 hours (1-on-1 lessons), and you have learnt about 200 kanji words.  You know about extra modest expression and passive sentence.

Advanced 3

  • You have completed Genki Book 2 up to chapter 20; or
  • You have studied Japanese for 200 hours (classroom-based) or 100 hours (1-on-1 lessons), and you have learnt more than 200 kanji words.  You know about causative verbs, causative-passive sentences, and instructional sentences.
  • You now want to hone your listening and speaking skills to be able to converse on various topics.

Advanced 4

  • You have studied Japanese for 220 hours (classroom-based) or 110 hours (1-on-1 lessons).
  • You now want to hone your reading and writing skills to be able  to understand various articles. You also want to sharpen your listening and speaking skills further.
